The Rise of the Contractors

Why the future of field service is a third-party workforce

Calling the use of subcontractors in field service a trend isn’t accurate. It’s not a trend - it’s a reality. The use of third-party vendors to complete service work has been on the rise for over a decade now, and today, nearly half of all field service work is being completed by subcontractors and third-party technicians. In this eBook, we’ll discuss what is driving the use of subcontractors and third-party technicians in the field service industry, including:

  • A lack of workforce due to ageing and skills gap
  • The rising ‘gig’ economy
  • Business growth plans for future expansion
  • The want to increase multiple business outcomes

As Business Process Coordinator for North Mechanical since 2018, I lead our team internally as we implemented Fieldpoint as our new service software while we simultaneously developed the integration with CMIC. While the words implementation and integration can well up some stressful, ominous thoughts in the average office these days, I can assure you the benefits we have reaped a mere 3 weeks after go live have been tremendous! We went from a redundant, manual data entry in three systems of record to two systems which are now integrated. While this was a clear time savings, we have streamlined communication, have fewer data inaccuracies, have better communication and are now paperless. The best part is that we did not have to sacrifice functionalities from our software wish list because we were able to work with top performers in their own segments which provided us quality tools to do our jobs well and with ease.
